Brief History of ROTARY CLUB OF IKOYI METROPOLITAN
The journey towards our becoming a Rotary Club started in 1998/1999 Rotary year when Rotary Club of
Ikoyi established that there was a need for a new Rotary club in their territory. The Rotary President then,
Rotarian Victor Oyolu started the process for establishing a new Club following Standard Rotary
Constitution.
Rotarian Jerry Okwuonu, an indefatigable, versatile, knowledgeable Rotarian, and an in-coming President of
Rotary Club of Ikoyi was appointed our DGSR. He called the first exploratory meeting in May 1999 and only 4
people responded. He was not discouraged and on the 28th of September 1999 a second meeting was called
and this time 15 new prospective members responded. At this time 3 other great Rotarians from Rotary Club of
Ikoyi – Rot Kola Ramos, Rot Faroun, Rot Liasu – joined Rotarian Okwuonu in seeing to the success of our
becoming a Club. They gave freely their Time, Talent, Treasury; they treated us to Rotary jokes and riddles; we
had talks on Rotary, etc delivered by distinguished guest speakers and as time went on, we were encouraged to
make impromptu speeches and talks. A new vista was opened to us and some of us who had some
preconceived notions about Rotary soon began to appreciate what this great organization was really about.
By May 2000, our application for membership of Rotary International was formally submitted having met the
minimum requirements of admission fee of $15 per member and 25 provisional members. Our hope then was
that we were to be Chartered before the end of June 2000 but this was not to be as we soon ran into several
logistic problems the most serious being with our membership. We took up this challenge and with the support
of another great Rotarian, Rot Gbenga Adekoya of RC of Ikoyi; and most importantly our District Governor Rot
Charles Adebiyi, who on assumption of office on 1st July 2001 took us a priority and his efforts ensured we were
chartered on 11th December 2001 and formally admitted as a Club in Rotary International.
A formal celebration of our Charter took place on the 15th of June 2002 and for the past 16 years, Rotary Club of
Ikoyi metro has shown incredible resilience and has contributed immensely in advancing the essence and
object of Rotary. It has produced 16 Rotary Presidents all with quintessential qualities of great leaders; it has
impacted the Community it serves in all areas – Literacy, Health, Water, Vocations, Polio eradication etc all of
which has earned the club the sobriquet ‘Pride of Rotary’.
In 2010-2011 Rotary Year we chartered a new Club in the District, Rotary Club of Ikorodu Metro. As at today the
club has chartered one Rotaract Club and 4 Interact Club.
